does anyone out there know if there has ever been any definitive research done on this? |

No. I do not. But, there are more than a few options for series/parallel speaker connections for special purposes - the Hafler Circuit being one of them. http://cdn.instructables.com/FSE/V48J/F ... MEDIUM.jpg At least, in my direct experience, there is no sacrifice in frequency range and response due to putting speakers in series. However, if configured in certain ways, there can be cancellation and sum/difference effects. Is this where you are going? Or are you asking a straight performance question. If the latter the short (and intuitive) answer is no, no effect. Just much power to each speaker and the amp sees a much higher impedance. Speaker performance will suffer overall, of course. |

indeed physical position can affect response whether series or parallel connected. i'm trying to ascertain whether the added inductance has an audible effect on the frequency response. |

Assuming the cabling meets minimum parameters for current carrying, that no unusual external conditions apply, that there are no stray fields in play, the additional inductance will be negligible and have no effect on audio frequency response. The difference is far too small to matter at audio frequencies. At rF and uF frequencies, perhaps. |
