Hi, I'm planning my first speaker build; single full range speakers that will be driven by my 7W per channel Poddwatt. They will be in a bass reflex cabinet as I'm limited in space. I'm considering: Audio Nirvana Classic 8 ferrite Audio Nirvana super 6.5 ferrite Mark audio Alpair 12p Dayton ps220-8 They all fit into my budget of up to £350 for drivers. Are there any others I should add to the mix? Does anyone have any thoughts on which would be best? They'll be replacing some old Mission 760i speakers so I guess any of them will be a step up. Thanks Rog |

Hi Rog: Prefer the the classic ferrite sound over the super Allpair 12 not in the same sonic postal code as the Nirvana Classic my humble subjective opinion |

I put in a good word for for Dayton ps180 FR. After using 2 and 3 ways all this time a full ranger is certainly a culture shock. After several months the speakers are breaking in nicely and sound quite balanced. Low frequencies are quite comparatively lighter in my cabinet but the midrange pops out nicely. A larger cabinet might extract more bass. Great for jazz and vocalists and Bruce’s recommended The Byrd’s sound great too. |

Thanks guys. I originally started thinking the AN classic 8 was my best balance of cost and performance. The extra 20% tax bringing them into the UK made me start to look at alternatives. However, in keeping with an ethos of the fewest number of highest quality parts I can afford I think it still leads the pack. I'm sure its extra sensitivity over the 12p will pay off. They just might have to go in an mdf rather than baltic ply enclosure to start with. Rog |
