Yes and no .... I have sort of postponed the purchase as I got VERY confused what to buy. Have found billions of sources for various connectors for iPhone but none for iPod.
Last weekend I was looking for a switch for my table lamp and asked in a car sterieo shop about the various connectors and learned that the iPod and iPhone connectors where the same size, but the various ins and outs were positioned differently apart from the power leads.
Shortly I will start looking again, especially as I have some projects coming up (got a pair of VT-25 ...).

I heard that the connectors for iPod and iPhone were the same when it came to audio (in??) and out, but the leads/connector pins for power (charger) differed.

Btw, I know that some guysat Swedish Electronic Forum use to make purchases from DealExtreme ... :smoking:

As mentioned in previous posts, there are several DIY-friendly ipod connectors.

As for the pinout, the line-out connectors have remained consistent across models of the iPod (not sure about iPhone, but that doesn't matter since you are only connecting to an iPod :)

Basically, you'll focus on pins 2,3 and 4 for line out. With the breakout connectors shown above, soldering is a breeze.

Here's a fun little dock I made out of junk parts:
