Ya know all those fancy audio boxes where if you plug-in headphones to the front jack it turns off the rear outputs to your speakers? I would like to know how they do that.

My main goal is to use one op-amp to pre-amp a signal, and send that signal to RCA outputs or a front headphone output, but have only one be active at time without using a hard switch. What do I do? wiring diagrams or any help would be very appreciated!

Hi,

They do that with switching in the jack.

BUT.... a far better way to do it is use a seperate heavy duty switch for speakers on/off, just like vintage SS amps because the switches in the jack are usually crummy quality and fail due to oxidization in a few years (unless you use a $50 gold jack).

Cheers!

not quite clear on the objective as rca level and headphones are two different signal levels.
could you outline the need for the switching function?
