I don't know how much you all know about circuit design around here but I was beginning to design a DAC around Texas Instrument's PCM1794A and had a few questions.

Firstly, I want to use a S/PDIF as an input. Since S/PDIF is toslink which is optical I'll need an optical receiver. I found one on Digikey

The datasheet ( shows there is a high and low output and a few voltage inputs and ground pin. Back over on the PCM1794A's datasheet (, however, it only shows one serial data input. How do I connect the output from the TOSLINK transceiver to the DAC? Do I need some kind of Digital Audio Receiver? (

Haven't looked at the full Toshiba datasheet but obviously it has a 3.3V PECL differential output signal.
And the DAC is expecting a single ended TTL type input.
You will need a PECL to TTL converter that is rated for the voltage levels these provide/are expecting.
Something like this...probably not the best part available but it is appropriate for the job.
