Looking at my mains wiring, I posted this in a different thread and thought it might be good here: In years gone by wire looms were always laced: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_lacing Mars lander: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... A04849.jpg I need to fasten the mains two core in a straight run across the brass support posts. I reached for the ty-raps (cuz its quick and easy). But it kinked the cable (not straight). I remembered years ago learning to use lacing to make harnesses, but I couldn't remember how to do it. I remember the lacing cord being waxed, and found some thin ribbon (so it doesn't cut into the cable). Then pulled it across a piece of wax. (yes its sticky and won't slide). But how to re-learn it, nice video here: https://youtu.be/oBG30s3PUKw now to have a go.. It would be nice to not use ty-raps. Lose the plastic, and its nice to look at...save the planet...LOL Regards M. Gregg |

Hi, There is a kind of string that is used to wrap the ends of ropes. (it might be called wipping cord) It is waxed and of suitable diameter. A roll of it will late lifetimes. An alternate is to use the cord for sindow blinds. It is a braided nylon and of suitable diameter, I might wax it or not, another possibility is to run it obe some cold hot melt glue sticks. Good listening Bruce |

Good listening Bruce Hi Bruce, I had a go with some window blind cord I pulled it over a wax block. I found short runs its just better to loop it twice and double tie. I used the ends from the last knot to tie to an unused plastic lug on the transformer to support the loom. NB in the other picture the mid linking loop (top in the picture) if you don't loop it over and under it doesn't hold Regards M. Gregg |

I have now, replaced all the ty-raps in my latest project. The mains cable is a better fix it used to slide from side to side on the EMI filter. Just used waxed window chord again twice round the filter tie it then wrap the knot ends around the mains wire and double tie. Regards M. Gregg |

Just discovered, If you put a spot of clear nail varnish on each knot you can cut closer. Obvious but I find it useful. Regards M. Gregg |

The only lacing I've ever used is cable ties Only one or two and everything is quick and fast. |

Did you look at the Mars rover (cable ties)? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... A04849.jpg There is a lot of talk these days about Plastic killing the planet, plastic straws are being replaced, cotton buds, perhaps its time to look at the cable tie? I agree its quick and fast! On old equipment I have seen the cable ties go brittle and just snap dropping the cables on the floor. Regards M. Gregg |

Dad dosen't accept the fact that this is the cause of the getting green in the world. That was a very interesting youtube link. For me its the exposure of marine life to micro plastic that I hate to see, turtles and seals trapped in drinks packaging etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGfIsMMTbL4 Apparently mico plastic is now in the food we eat. How much of a Cable Tie gets cut off as scrap and goes in the bin. Regards M. Gregg |
