The reason I ask this is,

I have never in 40 years of electronics seen snow generate high voltage.
Maybe there was a mass ejection at the same time who knows.

Typical. He's got it backwards. Snow, like rain, carries charge. The buildup of charge was on the ground, not the antenna. The antenna (b.t.w. improperly connected with no BALUN) also was ungrounded. But the, by his own admission, very large antenna was suspended within the charge field of the ground. When the field strength between the ground and the ungrounded antenna reached an appropriate level, the air gap broke down inside the radio.

This is why we take special measures to ensure proper ground plane connection to antennas to handle the mirroring currents and to always monitor or disconnect large antennas during weather events.
