I have no idea about radiation,

I would like to ask the forum.
Does anyone know if its possible for electronic components shipped around the world and bought for HiFi could be contaminated?
I'm also thinking *bay etc.

If someone has already asked this question then please just link to the thread.

I guess it would be picked up in airports (I assume). NB I don't have a Geiger counter and I assume not many would.
I'm expecting a reply something like yes its all OK no problem.

Regards
M. Gregg

Hi, A most curious question. As a former radiation protection officer for the US....my initial answer is not likely. Several reasons, first why would anyone do that? Second it would likely trigger alarms at the ports of entry, they routinely check for it. It is potentially dangerous if in sufficient quantities. It is also looked for at check points in the US. All that said there is one instance where there is radioactive content in components. A small amount is found in some vintage tubes. It was done to enhance their performance. They are pretty rare and newer ones without it are available and work at least as well. i seem to recall another device that had some. It was an ion generator for neutralizing static on vinyl LPs as they played. I have not seen this for some time either.

I would be interested to hear if someone has more information on this topic as it is so different.

Good listening
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I'm thinking about storage in locations. That may contaminate components.
Things like reactor melt down and parts salvaged then sold.
Military grade parts etc. Fall out in areas that have stored parts is another example.
That's just an addition to the previous post.

Hi, I still suspect they would not pass customs if there was any significant amount of radiation. However...anything is possible. If you amp glows at night with the power off.....run. :D

Good listening

A bit off topic,

Did you watch the Sky mini series Chernobyl?<<its a must see.
I'm borrowing a Geiger counter just for fun of course. If the amp glows but I can't see it I'll let you know.
I notice Siberia had an accident recently as well.

NB I could just take the parts in and get them tested but what if it was positive..a bit awkward maybe.
Of course its not going to happen, but I'll test myself.

On a serious note,

What levels would be considered unusual?
I.e. how far above background radiation?

I did a quick google and found a table this is just for fun so if anyone can say that any reading 0.005 millisieverts (Dental Xray) would be to much.
Anyway I will try the Geiger counter when I get it.

M. Gregg
