Hey guys

first post here :)

im buildng a preamp right now (Glassware Octal CCDA by broskie) and i want to throw a simple phono stage in the box while im at it..

i looked at both of this units and they seem just what im looking.. super cheap, sound right, simple to build and small phisicaly. both have the pro's and con's which hold me back from choosing..

did anyone try both and can addres this? which one's "problems" are more easy to live with\sort out? the k303 too much gain problem or the k301 tubes ringing (for example..)?

thanks a bunch for your help!
Tank out.

I have built a few of both. I thought both OK. Bruce tested the K303 and felt its performance was only basic and not really a high quality or high performance phono preamp.

Originally the K301 used two switch mode PSs. One you plugged into the wall the other on the cct. brd itself. I built the standard kit then my own version with all DC supplies. The K301 is probably the better sounding kit and now it is an all DC unit. Snap the PS away from the rest of the cct. brd. for better AC decoupling. These tubes do ring. They ring far less in non-metal boxes but because you are dealing with very low voltages from the cartridge you cant get noise induced.

I would go for the tube and FET K301. Some golden eared friends loved the sound of this one. I have sold all the kits I assembled so hard to go back and take a listen.

Projects: | “La Ruse” - tube SRPP ECC83 preamp | "Noir” - Psvane tube preamp | ”fiih-300” - 300W Holton based amp | "Sortilege" - 180W Tripath Class D Mundorf upgrade amp |
