MC-Step-up-Tranformer.jpgDIY MC Step-up Transformer4776 viewsI the everlasting quest to better audio, I entered the realm of the moving coil phono cartridge with a Denon DL-103. To rise the output voltage of the Denon DL-103, I've build this Step-up transformer with two mic transformer from Edcor , I've use cast iron pipe bend with end plugs to make an electromagnetic shield. RCA connectors are recessed in the back of the pipes which are mounted on a black walnut plinth.

12AX7-Tube-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg12AX7 Vacuum Tube Phono Preamplifier4763 viewsOk, so after buying a Sansui SR-1050C Turntable, I needed a phono preamp, so I built one.

This one uses no premium parts, but sounds great. It does have a small amount of 60Hz hum, and I plan on installing some tube shields as I know its been induced by the power transformer as the PS is completely clean. The preamp uses a pair of 12AX7 vacuum tubes.

The power supply uses a MOSFET for regulation and the preamp uses a passive RIAA equalization network.

Nelson-Pass-Bride-of-Zen-BoZ-Preamp-Aluminium-Case.jpgNelson Pass Bride of Zen (BoZ) Preamp - Aluminum Case4719 viewsThe finished Nelson Pass Bride of Zen (BoZ) Preamplifier. Where I though the Nelson Pass B1 buffer had excellent bass, the BoZ came in and made bass reproduction even heavier. Not more extended just weightier. Mid range and treble are extended and detailed. The Hammond aluminum cases sure are smart. You need a very, very quiet PS for this preamp. Any hum just leaches right through.

There is more info and notes in the JFET BoZ (Bride of Zen by Nelson Pass) thread on the forum.

Blue_Velvet_Pre_Amp.jpgThe Blue Velvet Tube Pre-Amplifier4707 viewsMy second tube audio DIY project, The Blue Velvet tube Preamp by Dick Olsher.
The only changes from the original schematic is the use of a 6X5GT tube rectifier. This is an excellent preamp. The 6SN7 tubes by KENRAD gives deep lows and velvet mids - highs. Coupling caps are Mundorf Silver Oil 0.68μF.

Power Supply transformer and Output transformers are handmade in Argentina by NavasBaccino. I'd like to thank Brad S. for the help. The sound is amazing and clear, free of distortion.

The heatsinks of the fanless enclosure are heating up to little more than 40° C

Hiraga-MC-Phono-Preamplifier.jpg
Hiraga-MC-Phono-Preamplifier.jpgHiraga MC Phono Preamplifier4677 viewsFinding I liked Moving Coil cartridges I tried my hand at yet another MC preamp. This one is a Jean Hiraga design and uses matched low noise bipolar transistors pairs and a +/- 6V source. The transistors Hiraga specifies are no longer available. But better replacements are the Analog Devices SSM2220 chips at $11 each (you need two). Hiraga specifies very large storage caps so I juiced this compact build with 1F (1,000,000uF). Plus I added 220uF low ESR caps and 0.22uF snubbers for better mid-range performance. Since this image I mounted an external switch to select between 220, 100 and 45 ohms of loading. A 25 turn trim pot allows adjustment of "0" volts on the input and Russian PIO caps decouple the output.

TSpecial.JPG6T9 4.7W DIY Tube Amplifier in a Baking Pan4646 viewsA Tube amp kit based on Spare Time Gizmo's printed circuit boards which are plated through, solder masked and screen printed. I sourced common components from the local electronics shop but used a pair of NOS GEC 6T9, Alps potentiometer, solid brass knob and a Hammond power transformer. The chassis is a Teflon coated backing pan ($7). The OPTs are custom wound toroidals. The amp is a little bass shy. Doubling the 100uF power caps helped increase bass. See the 6T9 Tube Amplifier Project for more details.
little-amp.jpg
little-amp.jpg50L6GT Tube Amplifier4636 viewsThis little guy is something I came up with when a friend asked me if there was an inexpensive, but decent vacuum tube amplifier he could build. Well, it is low cost and sounds acceptable, but it is dangerous as one side of the AC line is connected to the chassis. Yes, I used a polarized plug, but it also depends on the receptacle being wired correctly... so I recommended that he should build it with an isolation transformer.

It uses two 50L6GT output tubes driven with a 12AX7A. The heaters are series strung with a 68 ohm resistor to take up the remaining 8 volts. The powersupply uses a 1N4005 half-wave rectifier, so it was a bit difficult to filter out the 60 Hz buzz.

For something cheap, it doesn't sound half bad. Though, it doesn't hold a candle to my 6T9 Push-Pull Tube Amplifier!

Prada_1.jpgPrada OPA627 Preamplifier4614 viewsUsing my daughter's Prada phone box (heavy cardboard) I fashioned this preamplifier around the Bur Brown (high performance) OPA627AP opamp ($AU50). It is a single stage preamp and powered by four lithium 9V batteries for a PS of 18V.

The black knob is solid brass and the attenuator is an Alps Blue Velvet. Gold RCA jacks, silver wire and WBT silver solder are used throughout.
12inch-60L-DIY-Subwoofer.jpg
12inch-60L-DIY-Subwoofer.jpg12-inch 60L Subwoofer4614 viewsThese 60ltr sub-woofers were built to complement my 2-way speakers "VoXDeuX". The drivers are 12" polycones with a free air resonance of 25 Hz. In the box they go down to 31 Hz where they are very active. The drivers are very efficient and are being powered by a compact 50W Class-D amplifier. A stereo feed is taken from the preamp and passed through an electronic filter. The filter has a -3 dB point of 52 Hz and but employs only a -12 dB slope. The internals of the box comprise of six vertical braces. Bitumanised heavy Aluminum foil covers most surfaces. Pockets and chambers are formed at the rear by the bracing which carries additional dampening. These are then covered by a single layer of damping.
